Harriet F. Dappen, 74, of Flandreau died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010 with her family, at her winter home in Harlingen, TX, from ovarian cancer.
Harriet Fae was born to Harry and Lena Holmes, on Nov. 18, 1935 in Faulk County, SD.
She graduated from Faulkton High School in 1953 and Northern Teachers College in 1955. She married Luther Dappen in Aberdeen on August 13, 1954. She taught in Westport, SD for 1 year. The couple moved to Flandreau in 1969. Her other residences included Clay County and Orange City, IA, Geddes and Huron, SD and Detroit Lakes, MN. Luther and Harriet have been winter Texans for the past 18 years.
Harriet was a lively and energetic woman who loved spending time with family and friends, square dancing, gardening, cooking and sewing. She was an active member of the Flandreau United Methodist Church, Methodist Womens' group, Holly Hoppers Square Dance Club, Christian Women’s Connection, Red Hat's Society, Athena Club and the Auxiliary of the Moody Post 3351 of the VFW. She also volunteered working with early elementary students in Harlingen. Harriet was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
Her survivors include her husband, Luther; her four children: Darci Cyr, Burnsville, MN; Don (Darcey) Dappen, Eagan, MN; Tammy (Scott) Livingstone, Boulder, CO and Trudy (Jim) Bedessem, Lutz, FL; her grandchildren: Brigitte, Brenna and Braden Cyr, Eric and Kyle Dappen, Sage and Reece Livingstone and Jake Bedessem; her sister: Iann (Bob) Collins, Spearfish; her brother: Larry (Ann) Holmes, Pryor, OK; and her sister-in-law Sharon Holmes, Faulkton plus many other loved family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Gerald Holmes.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 7th, at Sunshine RV Park in Harlingen, at 1:00 PM. Her funeral service will be held on April 17th at 10:30 AM at the Flandreau United Methodist Church. A memorial fund will be established in her name.
