State Hand Corn Husking Contest held here Sunday

Eight local huskers advance to Nationals





The 37th annual South Dakota Hand Corn Husking Contest was held this past Sunday at Jim Redder’s farm in Flandreau. The event splits contestants up into age groups and times them to see who can pick the most ears of corn in that time. The contestants that placed in the top three of each age bracket, both men’s and women’s, move on to Nationals in Greenville, Ohio on October 20th.

Moody County will be sending eight contestants to Nationals, five men and three women.

John Boltes and Austin Boll, both of Ward finished in first and second in the “Youth Male” division, which includes ages 15-20, and will move on to Nationals.

Moody County swept the women’s “50 and over” division. Carol Kiecksee and Mary Clark, both of Flandreau, placed first and second respectively and Marlys Barthel of Ward placed third. Each of the three advanced to Nationals.

Jim Redder, who’s farm they were on for the competition, finished in third place in the “Men’s 50 and over” division, advancing to Nationals.

The final two Moody County contestants came in the “men’s 75 and over” division. Ken Evink of Flandreau and Leroy Anderson of Ward finished in second and third respectively.

Other Moody County contestants that finished outside the top three were Braeden Peters and Floyd Wakeman, both of Flandreau, in the “14 and under” division, David and Randy Schmidt of Flandreau in the 21-49 age bracket and Roger Johnson of Flandreau in the 50 and over division.
