Law enforcement officials are looking for suspects in a vandalism spree that cut a swath across the city of Colman last week.
Moody County Deputy Sheriff Jess Doyle said the perpetrators stole three golf carts and drove them through different areas of town, burglarized a local residence and vandalized the Sunrise Ridge Golf Course, Colman Pool and other areas of town.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours of July 21 – between 4:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., according to Doyle.
He said a residence on North Allen Avenue was broken into and a golf cart was stolen from the garage while the residents were sleeping inside.
Two more golf carts were taken from the golf course, and the carts were apparently driven around the course. Doyle said two green pins on the course were stolen and a post was run over by a cart. One of the green pins was recovered and the other was not.
All of the carts have since been recovered, Doyle said. One cart was found in a slough, another in the middle of town and the third in a ditch west of Colman. Two were discovered the morning of July 21, another on July 22.
Doyle said two bicycles were also stolen - from the yard of a residence across town – during the vandalism spree.
Extensive vandalism was discovered at the pool, where law enforcement discovered forced entry. Various “pool” items had been thrown into the pool, according to Doyle, including a stereo system and furniture. One of the bicycles that had been stolen from the residence was found at the bottom of the pool, he said. The other was found in the pool area.
Both bicycles were since recovered and returned to the rightful owners, Doyle said.
In addition, several mailboxes around the town of Colman were vandalized.
“The whole thing was spread pretty evenly through the city of Colman,” he said. “There was no area that was concentrated. It was really all over.”
Doyle, who has been interviewing various Colman residents, said the incident has created a stir in town.
“People are not happy,” he said.
Especially disturbed are the residents of the home that was broke into.
“The sad thing is these suspects broke in (and) entered into a person’s residence while the owners were home sleeping and that’s got them pretty bothered,” he said. “They’re obviously pretty concerned about it.”
Doyle said the perpetrators of the crimes would face felony charges if caught, including burglary, grand theft and intentional damage to property.
He said he has a few leads but nothing concrete. Doyle believes the crimes are related, due to their similarity in time and nature.
Anyone who has information about the incident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 997-2423.
